New studentWelcome – start here.

The things we usually get asked about, in one place. The union's most important task is to represent students towards the university and society – all students, not just members. Pick your city and we'll show you what applies there.

Växjö

Welcome to Växjö!

Students in Växjö enjoy a broad association life: some thirty associations regularly organise activities.

We organise the welcome fair in Växjö once at every start of term.

Kalmar

Welcome to Kalmar!

There's a life outside your studies, of course: some fifteen associations in Kalmar regularly organise activities.

We organise the welcome fair in Kalmar at the beginning of the autumn semester.

The introduction

The most fun of your whole student years

During the introduction weeks you get to know your new classmates while getting to know your new university city – and have a great time on top. The programme associations, ESN and Linnaeus Union are responsible for the introduction. Before the start of term, your association will contact you with all the information you need.

Haven't been contacted? In the association directory, each programme association lists the programmes it covers.

Good to know

Things worth knowing

  • The welcome fair

The aim is to introduce new students to the student city, student life and what companies, associations and public agencies offer. A great way to get an overview, pick up freebies and take part in giveaways. Attendance is usually around 3,000–5,000 students, new and current.

  • Later in your studies

Join a board or a committee. Influence your studies or study environment as a student representative or student safety representative. Or become a buddy to an international student if you want to practise languages and learn about other countries.

  • Housing

Start in the union's housing portal – and join the queues with the landlords in your city.

  • National student ID

Mecenat, Studentkortet and WeStudents – pick one or all three, free on the App Store and Google Play. For travel discounts you may need to upload a registration certificate showing you are an active student.

  • Health

Feeling well matters both for your studies and for you – and mental and physical health are often linked. The university's Student Health Service is there if you feel stressed, worried or low: in-person appointments in both cities or online by phone or Zoom, plus free lectures, seminars and lunchtime yoga.

  • Your rights

There are rights and obligations you are expected to know, follow and make use of. In particular, read up on the rules on cheating and plagiarism – discuss them with your teacher or get in touch with us.

  • Insurance

Get home insurance for your student housing too. Students at Linnaeus University are also insured during school hours and while travelling directly between home and the university premises. The insurance covers personal injury from accidents and certain cases of illness through infection – including during distance studies, if the accident is directly related to your studies.

  • Facebook groups

Groups for students at Lnu with information about everything to do with student life.
